Stanley Mathews

Stanley Mathews, 66, of Mount Union, died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 1994, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Sept. 6, 1928, Canaan township of Henry County, he was the son of Milo W. And Freda E. Roth Mathews. On Sept. 18, 1948, he married Delores L. Lauer in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. Mathews was a graduate of Pleasant Lawn School. He was a farmer, self-taught mechanic, draftsman and inventor. He was the co-owner of the Mathews-Mallams Fertilizer Company, founded the PABCO Fertilizer Company and was associated with various agricultural-chemical companies in Iowa and Illinois. He designed many grain handling systems for Agri-Builders and had constructed industrial flag poles that have been erected statewide.

He was a progressive board director for Midwest Old Threshers. In 1960, he founded the Midwest Central Railroad and remained an active board director, stepping down recently as president of the organization. He later developed Shop Services, Inc.

As an international consultant for steam and diesel operation he designed and fabricated locomotives and trains for several theme parks, including Disneyland, Fiesta Texas of San Antonio, Michael Jackson's Neverland, Dollywood and Disney World.

He was also a member of National Rifle Association, Pheasants Forever, and a former member of the Mount Pleasant Rotary.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Vicki Adlfinger of Bettendorf, Sharri Bahlmann of Littleton, Colo., Sharon Christensen of Grimes; one son, Rob D. Mathews of Davenport; one sister, Helen Morris of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

A private family service has been planned.

Memorial has been established.
