Winifred Mathews
Winifred Viola Mathews, 93, of Danville, died at 9 p.m. Friday, July 10, 1998, at Danville Care Center.
Born Feb. 22, 1905, in Holstein, she was the daughter of Winfred and Sadie Gleason Mighell. On June 2, 1930, she married George Henry Mathews in Cherokee. He died Sept. 30, 1978.
Mrs. Mathews was a retired teacher and homemaker. She taught at Denmark schools. She was a 1923 graduate of Holstein High School and State University of Iowa in home economics.
She was a member of Danville Congregational United Church of Christ. She was active in church and civic activities, was the first woman to be named to the school of religion board of trustees at the State University of Iowa, was a foster parent, was conference board chairman in 1972 of the former Congregational Christian Church and represented the denomination on the school of religion board. She was a 4-H leader, part owner of Danville Care Center, past member of Danville Garden Club, the Farm Bureau and PEO Chapter EV, past president of Iowa Women's Congregational Fellowship and volunteer activity director of Danville Care Center.
Survivors include foster children, Bob Ledman and Carroll Cosby, both of West Burlington, Dick Cosby of New London, Jim Hand of Danville, Judy Juhl, Ruth M. Smith and JoAnn Brumback, all of Burlington, Betty Jo Brickl of Las Vegas, Nev., and Pam Burroughs of Tulsa, Okla.; several nieces and nephews; and numerous foster grandchildren and foster great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one sister and one brother.
Visitation will begin after noon today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Mathews will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Danville Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Walter Martin officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in Danville.
Memorials have been established for Danville Care Center and Danville Congregational United Church of Christ.
