Carl Obermann

Carl L. Obermann, 84, of Vista Woods Care Center in Ottumwa, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at the care center.

Born Dec. 29, 1919, in Mount Union, he was the son of Henry and Lucy Hudson Obermann. He married Bettijane Swaim on Aug. 15, 1943, in Hollywood, Calif.

Mr. Obermann was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a captain in France and Germany in the 276th Infantry 70th Division and receiving a Bronze Star.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, a Morning Kiwanis member for more than 50 years, Salvation Army Board lifetime member, a Credit Bureau Foundation member for many years, and founder of NOEL Insurance. He was elected president of Iowa State Independent Insurance Agents in 1964, served as state and national director of Independent Insurance Agents, and was a member of O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Jon Obermann of Hannibal, Mo.; one daughter, SuAnn Brown of Ottumwa; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

His body has been cremated.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home in Ottumwa, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The memorial service for Mr. Obermann will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Terrence J. Kleven officiating. The graveside service will be in Ottumwa Cemetery, with military honors conducted by O.B. Nelson Post 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorials have been established for his church and Ottumwa Public Library.
