Dies at 81; Was First Mount Union Baby

Albert Lewis Smith, who claimed the distinction of being the first child born at Mount Union, died in Burlington hospital at 3:45 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21. Death was due to a stroke, suffered shortly after noon Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul N. Gustafson, Cliff Road. He lived at the Gustafson home for the past 18 months.

Smith died five days before his 81st birthday. He was the son of George M. and Elizabeth Mathews Smith. Most of his life was spent in the Mount Union and New London communities. He was a member of the Methodist church and of the Masonic lodge, both of New London.

On March 12, 1902, Smith was married to Mattie E. Brandmeyer, who died May 13, 1956. They were married at New London.

Surviving are the daughter, Ina Gustafson, and two grandsons. Four brothers and a sister died previously.

The body is at the Elliot chapel in New London, where last rites will be at three o'clock Saturday afternoon.

Officiating will be the Rev. Paul McDade, of Marengo, a former pastor of the New London Methodist church, and the present pastor, The Rev. Harvey Quandt.

Burial will be in the Trinity cemetery, six miles north of New London.
