Francis M. Smith

MOUNT UNION - Francis Marion Smith, a resident of Mount Union for the last 17 years, died at his home at 9:30 p.m. Aug. 28. Death was due to a heart attack.

A native of Sutton, Neb., Smith was born Oct. 2, 1874, the son of George Marion and Elizabeth Mathews Smith. He was married at Mount Union to Esther Pearl Funk on Jan. 24, 1900. She survives, as do two sons and a daughter: Howard E. Smith, Mount Union; Delmer M. Smith, Burlington, and Mrs. Irma Barnett, of Des Moines.

Also surviving are a brother, Albert L. Smith, New London; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Three brothers and a sister died previously.

Smith was a member of Canaan lodge 627, AF & AM.

Last rites will be held at the Mount Union Methodist church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Russell W. Hafner will officiate and burial will be in the Trinity cemetery, north of New London.

The body is at the Elliot Chapel, in New London.
