Harold Conard

Harold Lester Conard, 83, of rural Winfield, died Wednesday morning, March 19, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 17, 1920, in Louisa County, he was the son of James "Harry" and Lela Butcher Conard. On Jan. 10, 1942, he married Dixie Jean Lauer in Kahoka, Mo. She died Oct. 30, 1991.

Mr. Conard was a farmer.

He was a 1938 graduate of Winfield High School and attended Coe College. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and deacon, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5143, American Legion Post 643 and Masonic Good Faith Lodge 235, all of Winfield. He served on the boards for Sunrise Terrace, Westview Apartments, Winfield Farmers Cooperative and Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club. He was a World War II Army veteran and served with the 454th Infantry Division as a medic in the African, Sicilian and Italian campaigns.

Survivors include one son, Kerry Conard of Winfield; one sister, Norma Mae Rabedeaux of Eau Claire, Wis.; and one brother, Orval "Shorty" Conard of Winfield.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield.

The funeral for Mr. Conard will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Elwin Colson officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by Winfield VFW and American Legion will be in Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
