Glenn McCabe
Glenn A. McCabe, 82, of Mount Pleasant, died at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.
Born Oct. 30, 1916, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Harry B. and Clara E. Cornick McCabe. On Sept. 24, 1944, he married Omera I. Toler in Longworth, Texas.
Mr. McCabe was a 1933 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and farmed east of Mount Pleasant with his father until enlisting in the Army Air Force. He was a World War II B-17 bomber pilot when shot down by the Germans. He was rescued by the French Underground, escaped over the Pyreenees Mountains, and was later stationed at Fort Myers, Fla., Air Force Base, where he taught gunnery to B-24 bomber crews. He returned to farm east of Mount Pleasant, moving to town when he retired in 1987.
He had been a member of the former Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, current member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Pleasant and member of VFW Post No. 2561 of Mount Pleasant.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald McCabe of Burlington and Dennis McCabe of Middleton, Wis.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Russell W. McCabe of Spokane, Wash.; and one sister, Florence Rowan of Burlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter and one brother.
Visitation will begin at noon today at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. McCabe will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Weir Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Cook officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, southeast of Mount Pleasant.
Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church or Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
