Doris Strothman
Doris Maxwell Strothman, 92, of New London, died at 1230 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.
Born Dec. 28, 1905, in Crawfordsville, she was the daughter of Clyde and Ashsah Smith Maxwell. On June 11, 1929, she married Charles F. Strothman in Crawfordsville. He died May 27, 1985.
Mrs. Strothman graduated from Crawfordsville High School and what is now the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. She was a homemaker and country school teacher in Mount Union and Washington County. She did research for her husband, who was a former state representative for Henry County and was active in Republican politics.
She was a member of the Federation of Republican Women, where she served as state board, district president and national delegate, was a 4-H leader and committee chairwoman, past regent of James Harlan D.A.R. Chapter, and D.A.R. Speakers Bureau, Mount Pleasant Garden Club, chairwoman of Henry County Farm Bureau Women's and board member of Heart Association. She was an active member of Yarmouth United Church of Christ in Yarmouth, Women's Club of her church and Good Times Club.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Max Strothman of Marion, and Fredric Strothman and John Strothman, both of New London; three daughters, Carol Messer of Yarmouth, Charlotte Young of North Liberty and Charlene Larson of Stevens Point, Wis.; 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two grandchildren.
Friends may call after 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Strothman will be at 1030 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Walter B. Martin officiating. Burial will be in Shinar Cemetery of Pleasant Grove, rural New London.
A Doris Strothman Memorial has been established.
