Olephia Coad

Olephia Coad, 96, of Park Place Care Center in Mount Pleasant, formerly of Mount Union, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at the care center.

Born Feb. 4, 1910, near Mount Union, she was the daughter of John Alvin and Matilda Christine Hermann Crocker. On July 15, 1953, she married Fred Henry Coad in Streator, Ill. He died May 27, 1992.

Mrs. Coad taught school at the Center School, District 5 in Henry County for three years, Danville for 12 years, Mediapolis for two years, Burlington for eight years, Mount Union for seven years and retired from the Winfield-Mount Union School District after 11 years.

She was a 1927 graduate of Mount Union High School and a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, later the Mount Union United Methodist Church. She was active on church boards and committees and was superintendent of the Junior Department of Sunday School for more than 20 years.

Survivors include one niece, Lucille Hermann of Phoenix; two nephews, Cleo Crocker of Denver and Paul Crocker of Tucson.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one half brother.

The funeral for Mrs. Coad will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, with the Rev. Lexie Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Mount Union.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at Honts Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established for Mount Union United Methodist Church.
