Myrtle Hazen

Myrtle Jones Hazen, 97, of Corydon, formerly of Mount Pleasant and Salem, died Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon.

Born April 3, 1907, near Winfield, she was the daughter of William and Mary Elizabeth Gilyeart Schenk. On Sept. 30, 1924, she married Lloyd Edward Jones near Mount Union. He died Oct. 17, 1985. On April 8, 1989, she married Harry Hazen in Mount Pleasant. He died March 5, 1994.

Mrs. Hazen was a homemaker and helped on the farm.

She was a high school graduate. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Church Circle and was a former member of Salem Friends Church. She was involved with several groups in the community, Salem Federated Women's Club, Salem Kitchen Band, Mount Pleasant Women's Club and held several offices with the Henry County Republican Women. She volunteered with the American Cancer Society and the Heart Association. She enjoyed music and especially piano, flowers and being active in the community.

Survivors include three daughters, Doris Husted of South Sioux City, Neb., Mary Lou Roberts of Powersville, Mo., and Helen Garrels of Danville; one son, Dale Hazen of Yarmouth; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two daughters, four grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Hazen will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Edward Petersen officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery north of New London.
