Kenneth Wasson

Kenneth D. Wasson, 85, of Greenwood Manor Care Center in Iowa City, formerly of Walden Place and Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Greenwood Manor.

Born July 21, 1912, in Roscoe, he was the son of Guy Frederick and Nettie Toft Wasson. On Aug. 14, 1933, he married Jeanette M. Cline in Monmouth, Ill. She died April 14, 1970. He then married I. Pauline Carlson Redfern on Nov. 27, 1970.

Mr. Wasson farmed in New London area before moving to farm northeast of Mount Pleasant. He also was a rural mail carrier for some years. He retired from farming in 1983. He wintered in Clearwater, Fla., until moving to Iowa City in 1994.

He spent his youth in the Pleasant Grove area near Danville and attended Wasson School. He was a 1931 graduate of Yarmouth High School. While in high school, he drove a Model T school bus for the school district.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant. He was a 50-year Mason in New London Masonic Lodge No. 28 and was a former member of IOOF and Order of the Eastern Star. He helped build the Midwest Central Railroad and was one of its first conductors.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Weyburn Wasson of Iowa City; two grandsons of Iowa City; three stepdaughters, Donna Maas of Iowa City, Phyllis Allen of Cedar Falls and Rita Pogemiller of Minooka, Ill.; 10 stepgrandchildren; and two sisters, Gladys Van Tuyl of Mount Pleasant and Lois Martin of Danville.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Visitation will begin at noon today at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Wasson will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Kiboko I. Kiboko officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, south of Mount Union.

A memorial has been established for Greenwood Manor Care Center in Iowa City.
