Edith Oberman

Edith S. Oberman, 91, of Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 1998, at the care center.

Born March 20, 1907, near Stockport, she was the daughter of Martin and Emma Morris Spencer. On June 29, 1932, she married Howard W. Oberman in Burlington. He died Oct. 9, 1981.

Mrs. Oberman was a 1925 graduate of Stockport High School and a 1929 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College. She taught at Mount Union High School until her marriage and farmed with her husband near Mount Union, moving to Mount Pleasant in 1982.

She was a member of Mount Union Methodist Church for 65 years and was a Sunday school teacher, pianist and choir director. She served as a UMW local and district officer, was a member of Chapter U of TTT for more than 60 years, her local neighborhood club, the American Association of Retired Persons and Clio Study Club. She was a volunteer Gray Lady at the Mental Health Institute in Mount Pleasant and also volunteered for Head Start and Old Threshers.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Crabill of Mount Union; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, an infant daughter, an infant grandson and one sister.

Visitation will begin at noon Monday in Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Oberman will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Union Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bob Hary officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union.

Memorials have been established for Mount Union United Methodist Church, Hope Haven and Pleasant Manor Care Center Activity Fund.
