Gerald Anderson

Gerald Wayne Anderson, 77, 902 S. Adams St., Mount Pleasant, died at 10:55 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2003, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Sept. 27, 1925, in rural Mount Union, he was the son of A.B. and Nellie Mae Mathews Anderson. On Nov. 24, 1946, he married Selma May Salyers in Mount Union.

Mr. Anderson farmed the family farm on which he was born and raised. He also was a Funk's G Hybrid seed corn dealer. For nearly 35 years, he drove a school bus for the Winfield-Mount Union School District. In 1980, he retired from the farm, moved to Mount Pleasant and then took a position with the custodial staff of the Henry County Courthouse. He fully retired in 1990.

He attended the Center country school and graduated from Mount Union High School. He was an active church member. He first belonged to the former Trinity Methodist Church of rural Mount Union, where he sang in the church's barbershop quartet and served as the church school superintendent. He transferred his membership to Mount Union United Methodist Church when Trinity church merged with the Mount Union church. At the Mount Union church, he served as the Lay Leader. He then served as the associate district Lay Leader for the Muscatine District of the Iowa United Methodist Church conference. When he moved to Mount Pleasant, he transferred his membership to First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant.

He was a member of Henry County Farm Bureau and served as a member of the Henry County Extension Service council. For 17 years, he served on the county committee of the ASCS (now FSA). He loved horses and was a member of the Baltimore Riders Saddle Club of New London, and considered himself one of the "Old Prairie Cowboys."

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary Anderson of Wapello and Eric Anderson of Prairie City; two daughters, Carolyn "Kay" Neuweg of Mount Pleasant and Denise Proctor of Wever; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Paul Anderson of Mount Pleasant; and three sisters, Frances Oliver of Aledo, Ill., Lorena Williams of Columbus Junction and Pauline Willson of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Anderson will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mount Union United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson and Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery south of Mount Union.

Memorials have been established for Mount Union United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church of Mount Pleasant and Mount Pleasant Senior Citizens.
