James Garland

James Burton Garland, 90, of Luling, La., formerly of New London, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Ormond Nursing and Care Center in Destrehan, La.

Born Oct. 3, 1913, in London, Ky., he was the son of Fred and Retta Reams Garland. On Jan. 30, 1936, he married Opal Faye Hobart in rural Danville.

Mr. Garland was an auto mechanic for Primary Oil Co. of New London for 32 years before retiring.

He was a 1932 graduate of Winfield High School. He was a member of New London United Methodist Church, New London Odd Fellows Lodge 56 for 65 years, was the first grand master of Odd Fellows State of Iowa from the New London Lodge, serving from 1984 to 1985, was a life member of Moose Lodge 579 in Burlington and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Hobert Burton Garland of Luling; three granddaughters; three stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Peggy Hunt of Wapello and Freda Klingenberg of Eaton, Colo.; and one brother, Donald Garland of Stafford, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends following 6 p.m. Odd Fellows Rites to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Garland will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery in rural Danville.

A memorial has been established for Odd Fellows Lodge 56 of New London.
