Richard Hanna

Richard Ross Hanna, 76, of Danville died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 13, 1929, southwest of Danville, he was the son of Willis Ross and Ottillie A. Sommerfeldt Hanna. On March 2, 1968, he married Rita Rothlauf Jayne in West Burlington.

Mr. Hanna served in the Army for 14 years on active duty. He worked as a correctional officer for the Department of Corrections in Mount Pleasant, drove for Benner Tea in West Burlington, worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown and at Champion Spark Plug, and owned and operated Dick's Den for eight years.

He was a graduate of Danville High School. He was an Army veteran, enlisting in April 1951. After serving active duty, he enlisted in the Army Reserve and Iowa National Guard, retiring as a captain in October 1965. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Prairie Grove and the National Order of Battlefield Commissions. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, mechanics, carpentry, plumbing, being outdoors, mowing, puzzles, and building model ships and airplanes. He wrote and published two books of poetry and sang in a barbershop quartet.

Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Holly Parrott of Burlington, Gina Stokes of Omro, Wis., Mary Weyrick of Danville, Millie Nelson of West Burlington, and Vicki Garner and Robin Taylor, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Tim Jayne of Mount Pleasant and Bryan Hanna of Colorado Springs; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Andrews of Tallahassee, Fla.; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Hanna will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery in rural Danville.

Memorials have been established for New London VFW Post 7641 and Riverside Baptist Church of Burlington.
