Mary Matheny
Mary June Matheny, 91, of New London, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born Aug. 17, 1914, in Monmouth, Ill., she was the daughter of Arthur Edwin and Jennie June Russell Winebright. On April 16, 1933, she married Lester William Matheny in Knoxville, Ill. He died on Sept. 22, 1990.
Mrs. Matheny was a farmer with her husband.
She was a 1932 graduate of Monmouth High School and briefly studied music at Monmouth College. She was a member of the New London United Methodist Church. She was a member of the New London chapter No. 440 of the Eastern Star. She also was a member of the EV chapter of the PEO and was a member of United Methodist Women. She moved to New London after her marriage. She later moved to Yarmouth and Pleasant Lawn and returned to New London in 1958. She and her husband loaned farmland to New London Pioneers and New London Lads and Lassies 4-H groups to grow sweet corn as a fundraiser for many years.
Survivors include one son, David Matheny of Gardner, Kan.; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one brother and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Chapel in New London prior to the funeral, with family meeting friends from 10 to 11 a.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Matheny will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery in New London.
A memorial has been established.
