Laurence Coen

Laurence L. Coen, 87, of Danville, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 1999, at Danville Care Center in Danville.

Born Sept. 3, 1911, in Henry County, he was the son of Alva and Maude Archibald Coen. On June 12, 1935, he married Helen E. Bailey in Danville. She died Aug. 19, 1996.

Mr. Coen attended Mount Pleasant High School in Mount Pleasant and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was founder of Coen Plumbing and Heating of Danville and Burlington, where he worked for 38 years. He retired in 1975.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Danville, Danville Masonic Lodge No. 48 AF & AM, former member of Lion's Club of Danville, SCORE, Danville Town Council, Danville Volunteer Fire Department and Danville Care Center Board.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Walker of Burlington and Betty Hunsucker of Clovis, N.M.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Marjorie Riley of Marion, Virginia Coen of Mount Pleasant, Vera Johnson of Fairfield and Helen Snelling of Galesburg, Ill., and Sun City, Ariz.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter.

Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel, New London, and the family will receive friends one hour prior to the time of service Friday at First Baptist Church, Danville.

The funeral for Mr. Coen will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harry Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery, Danville.

Memorials have been established to the First Baptist Church of Danville and Clovis Nazarene School in Clovis, N.M.
