Cora D. Smiley Dies at Winfield

Funeral services for Cora D. Smiley, 78, will be held at the Winfield Presbyterian Church at 2:00 Sunday afternoon with the Rev. C. E. Chandler officiating. Miss Smiley died Thursday afternoon at her home after a lingering illness. She is survived by James Smiley, a cousin, who resided with her, and several other cousins.

She was the daughter of William and Frances (DeYarman) Smiley and was born June 11, 1870 at Uniontown, Pennsylvania. She came to Winfield with her parents when she was five years old. She attended the Winfield schools, Washington Iowa Academy, and Parsons College. She served as Dean of Women at Parsons from 1900 to 1910 and received an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature there June 3, 1941. She was a faithful member of the local Presbyterian Church and taught a Sunday School class for 22 successive years. She was an honorary member of the Women’s Missionary Society, served as president of the Presbyterial in the Iowa Presbyter for a number of years, as a member of P.E.O. since 1894, was charter member of the Senior Women’s Club and served on the local library board since 1916.
