Milburn Gerig 1916 - 2003

Milburn D. Gerig, 87, of Wayland, died following a brief illness Monday, April 1, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Jan. 30, 1916, in Henry County, he was the son of Jacob and Anna Nebel Gerig. On Feb. 27, 1945, he married Doris Graber. She died in 1995.

Mr. Gerig was employed in local businesses and farmed in the Wayland area until he retired.

He attended Wayland schools and was a 1933 graduate of Wayland High School. He was a lifelong member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.

Survivors include six daughters, Joan Gerig of Chicago, Jean Gerig of West Branch, Sandra Glick of Middleton, Wis., Faye Gerig of Williamsburg, Beth Gerig of Tiskilwa, Ill., and Pam Unruh of Wayland; six sons-in-law; and 13 grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and three grandchildren.

Mr. Gerig's body has been deeded to the University of Iowa School of Medicine.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.

The Gerig family invites everyone to a celebration service of his life at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.

Memorials have been established for Parkview Home of Wayland and the Mennonite Central Committee.

Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant is in charge of arrangements.
