George Fort 1934 - 2003

George "Bud" Fort, 68, of Wayland, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born May 28, 1934, in Montgomery County, Mo., he was the son of William Emil and Geneva D. Lail Fort. He married Georgia White on Sept. 8, 1973, in Mount Pleasant.

He attended Wayland High School and was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Fort was a carpenter and autobody repairman. He owned Fort and Son for 24 years and operated an auto body shop at his home until retiring in 1992.

He enjoyed old cars, camping, fishing, traveling, history, reading and cooking.

Survivors include his mother, Geneva Fort of Wayland; his wife; two sons, Kevin Fort of Wayland, and Brian Fort of Washington; two daughters, Regina Fort of Foristella, Mo., and Linnea Martin of Marion; two brothers, Jim Fort of Washington and Ron Fort of Central City; one sister-in-law; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service for Mr. Fort will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Wayland Mennonite Church with the Revs. Kenneth Hartman and Robert Wolf officiating. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Crossroads Hospice and Iowa ALS Foundation.
