Michael Klopfenstein 1942 - 2002

Michael D. Klopfenstein, 59, of Mount Pleasant, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Nov. 30, 1942, in Henry County, he was the son of Dennis and Arlene Goff Klopfenstein. He married Kathleen Crile on March 25, 1967, on Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, N.M.

Mr. Klopfenstein was a 1961 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College He entered the Air Force in 1963, and served in the military until 1967, with two of those years being spent in Germany. He was a self-employed farmer in the Mount Pleasant area.

He spent his free time fishing and hunting. He grew up in the Wayland Mennonite Church and was a member of the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Pat Winborn of Albia and Jill Dirkx of West Des Moines; four grandchildren; three brothers, Kenneth Klopfenstein of Fort Collins, Colo., and Gerry and Gene Klopfenstein, both of Wayland; one sister, Ann Krabill of Mount Pleasant; a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

A family burial service, with full military rites, will be on Friday, prior to the memorial service.

The memorial service for Mr. Klopfenstein will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Wayland Mennonite Church, with Pastor Philip Borleske officiating.

Memorials have been established for the Parkview Home of Wayland and for projects at the Henry County Conservation and Nature Center.
