L. Helen Rugg 1922 - 2002

L. Helen Rugg, 80, of Wayland, died following declining health Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born April 18, 1922, in North English, she was the daughter of Raymond V. and Lola Back Barger. On June 27, 1943, she married Walter "Doc" Rugg in Des Moines.

Mrs. Rugg was a homemaker.

She was a 1940 graduate of Millersburg High School and was valedictorian of her class. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Brethen Church in Millersburg and attended Prairie Flower Baptist Church north of Washington. She and her family moved to the Wayland area in 1964 from Oxford. She enjoyed flowers, plants, quilting, reading her Bible and gospel music.

Survivors include her husband; five sons, Fred Rugg, Merle Rugg and Beryl Rugg, all of Wayland, Sanford Rugg of Crawfordsville and Robert Rugg of Omaha, Neb.; five daughters, Linda Otis of Rochester, Minn., Judy Carney of Parnell, Laura Hill of Washington, Iowa, Mary Richardson of Collinsville, Ill., and Shelley Herren of Anamosa; 31 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lowell Cheney of Millersburg and Merrill Cheney of Washington; and one sister, Kathleen Cheney of Tolono, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-parents.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Beatty Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Rugg will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Beatty Funeral Home, with Pastor Don Collings and Daniel McClure officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name.
