Ernest "Ernie" Messer, 85, of Trenton, died at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born April 4, 1917, in Glasgow, he was the son of Arthur and Elsie McPheron Messer. He married Helen Schadt on Oct. 21, 1938, in Wayland.

Mr. Messer was a lifelong farmer.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching softball games and was a St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dwight of Wayland and Randy of Washington; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Guy of Mount Pleasant and Harold of Olds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 8:30 p.m. today at the Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Messer will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Green Mount Church of God, west of Trenton, with the Revs. Dennis Kuhns and Ralph Draper officiating. Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery.
