Elwyn Hirschy, 80, of New London, died Monday morning, July 1, 2002, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Born Feb. 24, 1922, in Wayland, he was the son of Joseph and Lydia Wagner Hirschy. He married Esther Craber on Sept. 21, 1948, at the Trenton Missionary Church.

Mr. Hirschy farmed for many years in the Wayland area, moving to New London 19 years ago. In recent years, he was a greeter at Wal-Mart.

He was a member of Trenton Missionary Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Norman Hirschy of New London; two daughters, Karen Hirschy of Goshen, Ind., and Sandy McVey of Hiawatha; one brother, Duwaine Hirschy of Wayland; four sisters, Joannita Stauffer, Freda Bachman, Lula Swanson and Joyce Conrad, all of Wayland; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one step-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, south of Wayland, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Hirschy will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for his church.
