Walker H. Evans, 95, of Winfield, died Thursday morning, April 18, 2002, at Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa.

Born April 9, 1907, near Winfield, he was the son of Edward and Myrtle Detrick Evans. He married Ruth Marie Carden on July 11, 1928, in Mount Pleasant. She died Oct. 18, 1984.

Mr. Evans was a 1925 graduate of Winfield High School and a 1931 graduate of Monmouth College, majoring in Greek and Latin. After working for Warren County Library and Irving Moore Nurseries in Monmouth, Ill., for 12 years, he and his family moved to the Wyman community, where they began to farm in 1938. He farmed near Wyman, Wayland and Winfield until 1975, when he retired to Winfield.

His farming interests included crops, purebred Jersey dairy cattle and purebred Chester White hogs. He raised the first hybrid popcorn in his community in 1938 and was among the first producers of specific-pathogen-free hogs in Iowa in 1960.

He also worked for more than 18 years with the Peoples State Bank of Winfield from 1950 to 1969.

He served as trustee from 1968 to 1979, and as clerk from 1970 to 1981, of the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery; on the Henry County Extension Council; and on the board of directors of Winfield Public Library. He was a longtime member of Winfield First Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday school for more than 25 years in Winfield, Monmouth and Wayland, beginning at age 14.

Survivors include one son, James Forrest Evans of Philo, Ill.; two daughters, Ruth Elaine Shupe of Davenport and Norma Virginia Buffington of Winfield; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son, two brothers and one stepbrother.

His body has been cremated. There will be no visitation.

The memorial service for Mr. Evans will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Winfield First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Elwin Colson officiating. A time of fellowship and lunch will follow the service. A private family inurnment service will be in Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for his church, Winfield Public Library and Sunrise Terrace Care Center.
