Lloyd H. Wonderlich, 84, of Iowa City, formerly of rural Mount Pleasant, Wayland and Riverside, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at his home after an extended illness.

Born Feb. 4, 1917, in Ollie, he was the son of George Henry and Laura Hardin Wonderlich. He married Dorothy Alberta Brown on May 29, 1941, in Mount Pleasant. She died Dec. 28, 1977. He married Vivian Marguerite Calvert Mills on Dec. 30, 1978, in Mount Pleasant.

Mr. Wonderlich was a 1935 graduate of Ollie High School. He farmed for many years north of Mount Pleasant and east of Trenton. He was noted for the buffalo he raised on the farm. During that time, he also was a delivery driver for the Bluebird Bus Co. After retiring, he moved to Wayland, where he owned a woodworking shop. He then moved to Riverside and later to Iowa City.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a 50-year Mason of Mount Pleasant Lodge 8 AF & AM. He served for five years as director of the board of the National Buffalo Association and then served as vice president and president. He will be remembered for his delightful sense of humor and his willingness to lend a hand to all in need.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Richard "Dick" Wonderlich of Mount Pleasant; four stepsons, Gaylord of Muscatine, Darrell of Lafayette, La., Sid of Iowa City and Van Buren of Skull Valley, Ariz.; three stepdaughters, Beverly Freyermuth of Waverly, Tenn., Cassie Allen of Yarmouth and Christine Schlabach of Parnell; two sisters, Thelma Stanbrough of Ottumwa and Evelyn Byers of Fremont; two grandchildren; 28 step-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one brother and three step-grandsons.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Wonderlich will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Ollie Cemetery in Ollie.

Memorials have been established for the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospitals and Iowa City Hospice, Inc.
