Freda M. Barr, 97, of Mount Pleasant, died at 3:40 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, of a heart ailment.

Born May 2, 1904, near Wayland, she was the daughter of George Fremont and Christina S. Loder Barr. She married Merle Green on June 2, 1926, in Mount Pleasant. He died Nov. 7, 1974. She married Leslie Barr on Nov. 7, 1975, in Mount Pleasant. He also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Barr was a 1922 graduate of Wayland High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant for two years. She and her first husband lived in Fort Collins, Colo., where he was the Larimer County treasurer and she taught elementary school for 23 years. During that time, she obtained her bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, the Social Order of the Bauceant, Retired Teachers Association and the Coterie of Mount Pleasant. She was a member and past officer of Bethlehem Chapter 38 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Mount Pleasant the OES in Fort Collins.

Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Tweedy of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Wilma Koehler of Washington, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, three brothers, two sisters and one son-in-law.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, where an OES service will be at 3 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Barr will immediately follow the OES service, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Loveland Burial Park Cemetery in Loveland, Colo., with the OES chapter of Fort Collins conducting the service.

Memorials have been established for Mount Pleasant Public Library and the library at First United Methodist Church.
