Ralph Unternahrer 1940 - 2001

Ralph Leichty Unternahrer, 60, of Wayland, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born Nov. 6, 1940, in Wayland, he was the son of Jacob and Mayme Leichty Unternahrer. He married Martha Speake on June 10, 1962, in Wayland.

Mr. Unternahrer was a 1959 graduate of Wayland High School. He then worked at the American Pearl Factory in Washington and spent two years in voluntary service with the Mennonite Church in Newton, Kan. For 33 years, he worked at Vetter's Inc. (Culligan) in Washington as a sales manager and service representative until his death.

He was a member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and the Rolling Spoke Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, motorcycling, biking and camping.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Jason Unternahrer of Wayland; two daughters, Cynthia Hammen of Wayland and Rita Glover of Mount Pleasant; four brothers, Daniel Unternahrer of Shipshewanna, Ind., Harold and John Unternahrer, both of Wayland, and Clarence Unternahrer of Ainsworth; three sisters, Edna Beckler of Wayland, Ruth Kaufman of Calispell, Mont., and Mildred Beckler of Noble; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland, where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Unternahrer will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Roger Farmer officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland is in charge of arrangements.
