Donnie Hertig, 70, of Wayland, died of cancer Tuesday, July 31, 2001, at Halcyon House Care Center in Washington, Iowa.

Born Jan. 8, 1931 north of Wayland, he was the son of Chris and Minnie Boese Hertig. On Sept. 11, 1955, he married Jean Davison at Wayland Mennonite Church.

Mr. Hertig farmed for most of his life. He also owned and operated Hertig Green Acre Fertilizer Business.

He was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church, Wayland Lions Club, Wayland State Bank Board of Directors, Wayland Area Antique Tractor Club and the Wayland Festival of Lights Committee. He enjoyed woodworking, collecting farm toys and being active with his church, family and community.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Vicky Hertig of Seattle and Denise Mikkelsen of Eldridge; three grandchildren; and one brother, Clinton Hertig of Wayland.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Visitation will begin at noon today at Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Hertig will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bethel Mennonite Church, north of Wayland, with the Rev. Phil Slabaugh officiating. Burial will be in North Hill Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Bethel Mennonite Church and Mercy Hospital Foundation Cancer Fund.
