Rex Norton 1931 - 2001

Rex Norton, 69, of Mount Pleasant, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mount Pleasant.

Born Dec. 29, 1931, in Wayland, he was the son of Floyd and Gladys Bain Norton. He married Marjorie Stewart on June 26, 1952. He later married Bonnie Albright on July 7, 1990.

Mr. Norton was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He received three bronze service stars and was honorably discharged on Nov. 11, 1953. He was a self-employed truck driver and for a period of time was a police officer with the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

He was a member of Mount Pleasant Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2561 and American Legion Post 58 for 46 years. He enjoyed car racing and people.

Survivors include two sons, Rodney and Randy Norton, both of Stockton, Calif.; three brothers, Max Norton of Mount Union, Harold Norton of Fairfield and Richard Norton of Aledo, Ill.; one sister, Dortha Landrum of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Norton will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harold Dorsey officiating. Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery, with military rites conducted by VFW Post 2561 and Amvets Post 44.

A memorial has been established.
