Marie Madeline Vorhies, 88, died Monday afternoon, March 19, 2001, at Van Vorhies Haus in Mount Pleasant.

Born April 21, 1912, near Lockridge, she was the daughter of Charles and Margaret Pohren Graf. She married Samuel S. Vorhies on Jan. 24, 1935, in Germanville. He died in April 1992.

Mrs. Vorhies attended school at Victory No. 8, near Lockridge. In 1970, she and her husband retired from farming and moved to Mount Pleasant. She worked at Jerry's Restaurant until May 1998, helping her daughter, Lea, and for a time cleaned homes for local families.

She was a lifelong member of Hope Lutheran Church of Germanville.

She was known as "Grandma" to many and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She also enjoyed quilting, playing cards and baking.

Survivors include five daughters, Roberta Mattson of Lockridge, Lea Bradley, Juanita Griest and Kay Milks, all of Mount Pleasant, and Thelma Smiddy of Macomb, Ill.; one son, Stanley Vorhies of Dallas City, Ill.; two sisters, Edith Diers of Wayland and Mildred Hill of Washington, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one step-grandchild.

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Vorhies will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hope Lutheran Church in Germanville. Burial will be in the Vorhies Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for her church, Vorhies Cemetery and Heart Connection Children's Cancer Camp.
