OBITUARY
DAVID MILLER DIES SATURDAY
Wayland News June 22, 1939
Funeral services for David Miller who passed away very suddenly on Saturday afternoon at age 34, were held Tuesday at 1:30 at the house and at 2:00 in the Sugar Creek Church. Burial was in the Sugar Creek cemetery.
Mr. Miller’s death occurred at the home of his son, Dallas Miller, five miles east of Wayland. He had been helping his son’s wife pick cherries an suffered a heart attack which caused his death. During the spring months he had been at the University Hospital at Iowa City receiving treatment for heart trouble.
David Miller was born October 9, 1872 in Holmes Co. Ohio and lived in Ohio until 1919 when he came to the Wayland community. He was married November 4, 1894 to Emma Mast and they were the parents of five children: two of whom preceded him in death. Mrs. Miller died November 29, 1915. Mr. Miller was married to Mrs. Ida Wyse Roth of Wayland on December 30, 1919 and they resided on a farm east of town until a year ago when they moved to Wayland.
In his youth Mr. Miller joined the Amish Mennonite Church in Ohio but transferred to Sugar Creek after coming to Wayland.
He is survived by Mrs. Miller and four stepdaughters, two sons, Oscar and Dallas, both living nearby Wayland, one daughter, Mrs. Will Miller of Fredericksburg, Ohio, one brother, Levi Miller and a sister Mrs. Kate Clark both of Millersburg, Ohio and another sister, Mrs. Henry Baker of Protection, Kansas. Seven grandchildren also survive.
David E. Miller was born in Holmes County, Ohio October , 1872. He grew to manhood in his native community. On November 4, 1894 he was married to Emma Mast. There home was blessed with five children. On November 29, 1915 his wife died. One son had preceded her in death and one daughter (Mrs. John Kandle) died since her death. On December 20, 1919 he was married to Mrs. Ida Wyse Roth of Wayland, Iowa and lived on a farm in this community until about a year ago when they moved to town. Brother Miller was converted in his youth in Ohio and united with the Amish Mennonite Church. Later he transferred his membership to Sugar Creek of which he was a member at the time of his death. He was of a quiet and unassuming dispositioned which won him many friends. About a year or so ago his health was impaired due to the condition of his heart. He was up and about but could not stand any exertion. He passed away very suddenly while out on his farm Saturday afternoon June 17, 1939 at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 8 days. He leaves his wife and four step-daughters, two sons, Oscar and Dallas both of near Wayland, one daughter Mrs. William Miller of Fredericksburg Ohio, one brother Levi of Millersburg, Ohio two sisters Mrs. Katie Clark of Millersburg, Ohio and Mrs. Henry Baker of Protection, Kansas, seven grandchildren, and a large number of other relatives and friends.
