Mae Register 1919 - 2005

Mae Register, 85 of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Thursday, February 3, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Rev. David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Oakland Mills Ladies’ Aid and the Henry County Health Center Auxiliary.

Born April 3, 1919 in Henry County, Iowa, Mae was the daughter of Guy and Alice Blanche Doan Simkin. She was educated in the rural schools and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1938. On December 31, 1941, Mae married Carl Register in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He preceded her in death on
June 30, 1994.

Before she was married, Mae worked for the A&P Co. After her marriage, Mae stayed home for some years to raise her family. When she returned to work, she worked for Shaffer Pen and then for many years as a clerk in the J.C. Penney Store, until her retirement in 1981.

Mae was a member of the First Baptist Church and also attended Oakland Mills Community Church. She was a member of the Oakland Mills Ladies Aid and Eunice Circle. She enjoyed volunteering and was a member of RSVP of Mt. Pleasant and the HCHC Auxiliary. She was a fifty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of White Shrine. Mae was a member of TTT Chapter A, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Pinochle Club, and the Nimble Thimble Club.

Mae is survived by three daughters, Doris Wellington of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Jean and her husband Robert Smoot of Dodge City, Kansas, and Janet and her husband Jim Mannen of Mansfield, Texas and one brother, Ed Simkin of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Along with her husband, Mae has been preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Freda Townsend and Agnes Van Amerongen.
