Wayland Times - 1920

On the morning of Thursday, November 11, Cleve Wittmer had 25 acres of corn in the field. By 2 o'clock of the same day, not a nubbin was left in the big field. Cyclone? No. Fire? No. Flood? No. Grasshoppers? Aw shucks, of course not. Cleve has neighbors, in fact, no man ever had better neighbors in this world than has Cleve Wittmer, and on that Thursday morning, when the sun crept on the eastern horizon, it revealed 24 wagons and 47 men wading into that corn field like all "git out". In the afternoon, two more huskers came and by 2 o'clock that 25 acres of corn was in the crib.

The husking bee was planned by Dave Schlatter and J. G. Wenger, and every farmer in the community and some who were not farmers, gladly gave the day to help a neighbor who is unable to gather his corn. At noon, a bountiful dinner had been prepared and was served by Mrs. Jack Schlatter, Mrs. H. D. Johnson, Mrs. Dave Schlatter, and Mrs. C. R. Wyse. Mrs. Cleve Wittmer acting as superintendent and hostess to the hungry corn huskers.

These are they who did the business--David Schlatter, Jacob G. Wenger, Elmer Krabill, Milton Roth,
