Services held at: 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 23, 2002 at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Rich King officiating. Interment will follow at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery.

Visitation times are: 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory where the family will greet friends fron 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Richard J. Hurd, age 82, of the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, formerly of Dows, Iowa, died Monday, August 20, 2002 at Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
FUNERAL SERVICES will be held Friday, August 23, 2002, 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr.Rich King, First Presbyterian Church, officiating. A VISITATION will be from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. INTERMENT will follow services at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa, with the V.F.W., Harry C. Harter Post No. 839, providing full military honors. MEMORIALS may be directed to the Richard J. Hurd Memorial Fund.

Richard Jay was born January 27, 1920, in Alden, Iowa the son of Stanton F. & Irene L. (Bryan) Hurd.Richard grew up in the Hardin County area where he attended school.He was married to Myrna Marie McDonald, November 24, 1939 in Lancaster, Missouri. He moved to Hampton for about a year before moving to Dows, where he farmed until about 1959. He moved into Dows and started working as a carpenter, where he enjoyed fixing and repairing all types of items. He served his country during WWII from June 1944 to January 1946 in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed collecting owls, playing the harmonica, playing cards, and dancing. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dows.

He is survived by a son: Murvil & wife Connie Hurd, Eagan, Minnesota, two daughters: Darla & husband Willis Brooks, Bella Vista, Arkansas and Leann & husband David Tjarks, Goldfield, Iowa, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a brother: Max & wife Gerry Hurd, Council Bluffs, Iowa and a sister: Geraldine Blankenship, Hampton, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Myrna (July 26, 2002), a daughter: Janet Jansen, two granchildren: Jeff & Jessica Jansen, a brother: Donald and a sister: Marie Newberry.
