Leonard Nordyke

ELDORA—Leonard “Duke” Nordyke, 69, of Eldora died from natural causes Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora with the Rev. Mary Stonebraker officiating. Burial followed at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora.

Leonard was born June 3, 1935, in McIntire, son of Jesse Elias and Rhoda Marie (Doane) Nordyke, and was raised in Osage. On June 20, 1969, he was united in marriage to Hazel Ann Blandau in Elk Point, S.D. They resided in Eldora their entire married lives except for winters in Alamo, Texas. Duke worked at the Lawn Hill Elevator for 30 years. He was a handyman and woodworker and enjoyed making lawn ornaments for family and friends. Duke liked having morning coffee with friends at the Weathered Wheel in Eldora and making occasional trips to the casino in Tama.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel; daughters Beverly Nordyke of Boone, Regina Albee and husband Lynn of Iowa Falls, Vickie Paul and husband Don of Eldora, and Jill Johnson and husband Ray of Pasadena, Tex.; son Mike Blandau and wife Connie of Eldora; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters Neva Whitmore and special friend Chuck Moore of Osage, Zola Borchardt and husband Reuben of Plymouth, and Darla Burrett of Peoria, Ill.; and sister-in-law Rosemary Nordyke of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Leonard Scott; brothers Mervin and Donald; an infant brother; and grandsons Derek Sanders and Tanner Ackerson.
