APLINGTON - Ervin L. Diekman, 81, of Aplington died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 27, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington with Rev. Greg Smith officiating.
Ervin was born Aug. 31, 1922, to George and Anna (Wiegman) Diekman near Kesley in Butler County. He graduated from Aplington High School, and attended Luther College for two years. Ervin played baseball and football in high school and college. He joined the U.S. Army on March 4, 1943, and served in Europe during WWII with an Army field hospital, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 5, 1945.
On March 28, 1943, he was united in marriage with LaVon Uhlenhopp at Junction City, Kan. Following his discharge from the Army, the couple made their home in Aplington where Ervin joined his father in the family grocery business. Ervin became full partner with his brother, Wayne, in the Diekman Brothers Grocery Store. He retired from the business in 1977. Ervin was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington. He served on the Aplington City Council and was a volunteer fireman for the Aplington Fire Department. Ervin was a lifetime member of the Aplington Amvets Post No. 102. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed listening to sporting events on the radio.
Survivors include his wife, LaVon of Aplington; one daughter, Sharon Lindaman and husband Marvin of Cedar Falls; one son, Terrill Diekman and wife Denice of Elgin; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne Diekman and wife Janice of Aplington; and one sister, Lorene Vietor of Parkersburg. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Elmer Diekman.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel at Aplington was in charge of arrangements.
