WELLSBURG - Esther L. Rieken, 80, of Wellsburg, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 6, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, northwest of Wellsburg. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Esther was born June 4, 1923, in rural Ackley to John and Anna (Oelmann) Kappel. She was raised near Ackley. On Nov. 18, 1944, Esther was united in marriage to Lester Rieken at St. Peter's United Church of Christ. Esther was a homemaker and farm wife, living most of her adult life on the family farm located five miles north of Wellsburg. She was a member of St. Peter's where she was involved with various womens' groups and was a youth leader with her husband for several years. Painting and ceramics were among her favorites.
Survivors include one son, Duane Rieken and wife Kristen of Ackley; one brother, Robert Kappel and wife Beverly of Ackley; four grandchildren, Tara Rieken, Erin Murphy, Annesley Miller and Jennifer Aldinger; and three great-grandchildren, Cadence Harms, Layne Aldinger and Haylee Aldinger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; her parents; three sisters, Sophie Bartling, Ann Bohlman and Nettie Bohlman; and three brothers, Wallace, George and Hannis Kappel.
Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg is in charge of arrangements.
