WATERLOO - Ellen Elzina Stilson, 96, of Waterloo died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo. Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 28, at 10:30 a.m. at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 27, from 5-7 p.m. at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.
Ellen was born Oct. 22, 1907, at Fernald to Alby and Sarah (Graham) Kuhn. She graduated from the Sheffield High School and received her teaching certificate from Northern Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. On June 1, 1933, she was united in marriage to Homer Stilson at Elkader. Ellen was employed as a teacher. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was involved in the women's group. Ellen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Craft Club. Sewing, crafts, reading and spending time with family and friends were among her favorites.
Survivors include four daughters, Ellen Janie Brandhorst, Shirley Curran and husband Roger and Donna Stock all of Waterloo, and Dotta Uhlenhopp and husband Lyle of Aplington; 16 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Homer; one sister, Violet Hudson; two brothers, Merle and Harold Kuhn; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
