HUBBARD - Mary Charlotte Fisher, 95, of Hubbard died Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at Hubbard Care Center, Inc., in Hubbard. Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at Salem United Methodist Church in Hubbard. Burial was at the Hubbard Cemetery.
Mary was born April 10, 1908, to Otto and Charlotte (Schirmer) Boettcher at their farm home near Holton, Kan. She attended Lower Banner School and graduated from Holton High School in 1926. She lived and worked in Delano, Calif., from 1927-1929 before returning to Holton. On August 12, 1930, Mary was united in marriage to Oswell H. Fisher at her parents' home near Holton. After farming three years with Oswell's family, they moved to a farm near Topeka, Kan., and raised sheep. On March 1, 1944, they moved their family to her cousin's farm southeast of Hubbard, and in 1950, moved two miles west to their own farm. In 1966, they retired to Hubbard, where they lived until February 2000.
Mary taught nursery and kindergarten classes at Salem Church for 21 years. She taught 205 children from 107 families. She held various offices in church, was a member of UMW for 73 years. Her later interest was in quilting and serving funeral lunches. The quilt in the fellowship hall was a "pet" project. As a farm wife, and later with the help of Oswell, fruits and vegetables were canned and frozen in abundance.
The couple traveled with their children and the older grandchildren on memorable vacations. They also traveled extensively to visit their siblings in Kansas, Texas, California and Oregon, as well as sightseeing trips to all 50 states, Mexico, Europe, Australia and Canadian fishing trips.
Mary is survived by four children, Robert Fisher and wife Nita of Story City, Helen Eley and husband Wendell of Zearing, David Fisher and wife Marlys and Bernice and Penning and husband Leonard all of Hubbard; 16 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Laurine Nielson of Santa Maria, Calif., and Clarice Hiett of Daggett, Calif.; one brother, Lawrence Boettcher and wife Ruth of Fresno, Calif.; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Boettcher of Morro Bay, Calif. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Oswell; three infant granddaughters, Janis and Jean Fisher and Lois Penning; grandson-in-law, Tim Peirce; two brothers, William Boettcher and wife Bernice and Otto Boettcher Jr.; and two brothers-in-law, Uriel Nielson and Harry Hiett.
Boeke Funeral Home of Hubbard was in charge of arrangements.
