IOWA FALLS - Duane L. Fiscus, 82, of Iowa Falls died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. the First Baptist Church in Iowa Falls with burial to follow at the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 2-8 p.m. at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family receiving friends between 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family c/o his wife, Phyllis Fiscus, 1606 Sanford Dr., Iowa Falls, IA 50126.
Duane was born Oct. 12, 1921, at Parker, S.D., to Floyd and Hazel (Hulett) Fiscus. He attended and graduated from the Parker Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1939. Duane then attended the Central Iowa Business College in Marshalltown, graduating in 1940. Following his graduation, he was employed by the Kiowa Corporation of Marshalltown until his induction into the Army.
Duane served with the U.S. Army during W.W.II from Oct. 19, 1942, until Nov. 10, 1945, and served basically as an ammunitions transporter in central Europe and Rhineland, receiving two bronze stars for those campaigns. After his discharge, he began farming in the Alden area and settled on a farm three miles south of Alden. On Oct. 7, 1950, he was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Cox at the First Baptist Church in Iowa Falls. He was chosen a Master Swine Producer of Iowa by the Swine Producers Association in 1966, and received the Hog Pace Setter award from the National Livestock Producers Association in 1967. He served on the Alden School Board for 14 years and had served as treasurer and president. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iowa Falls, serving as past trustee, moderator and Sunday school teacher. Duane was also a member of the Collins-Dunning American Legion Post No. 201 in Alden.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; one son, Jeff Fiscus of Alden; three daughters, Judy Mentzer, Sharon Ites and husband Bud and Karen Hoelscher and husband Bruce all of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren, Michael Mentzer and wife Angie of Alden, Michelle Smith and husband Doug, Heather Reed and husband Jim, Tracy Ites, Tyler Hoelscher and Kristine Hoelscher all of Iowa Falls, and Nicole Hinkle and husband Jason of Newport News, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Colton and Caden Mentzer of Alden, Lucas Smith and Cody Reed of Iowa Falls and Parker Hinkle of Newport News; one sister, Opal Hulsart of Orange City; one sister-in-law, Virginia Fiscus of Iowa Falls; two nieces, Carol Hulsart of Orange City and Bonnie Anderson and husband Jim of Martinez, Calif.; one nephew, David Hulsart and wife Karen of Orange City; and one special niece, Kay Meyer of Maquoketa. He was preceded in death by his parents; one great-granddaughter in infancy, Danielle Reed; one brother, Cleo Fiscus; one sister-in-law, Jo Fiscus; and one brother-in-law, Frank Hulsart.
