HUBBARD - Wayne C. Meier, 84, of Hubbard died Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, at Israel Hospice House at Ames following a lengthy battle with cancer. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Hubbard with Revs. John Attaway and Jeff Filkins officiating. Memorial gifts may be directed to the family.
Wayne was born Aug. 4, 1919, to Henry and Emma (Kuhlman) Meier at the family farmstead west of Hubbard. He attended McCoy Rural School for one year and graduated from Hubbard High School. He attended Iowa State University until he entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, spending most of his three-year duty as an air traffic controller in Shelton, Wash. On June 19, 1945, he married Roberta Davis Elder in Albia. After his discharge, the couple made their home on the family farm, where they raised corn, soybeans, hogs and cattle. Wayne was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, where he served on the board, and was also on the Hubbard Co-op board for 12 years. He was one of Hubbard's first trained EMTA's, and remained active for several years.
In 1977, the couple moved to Hubbard, and Wayne was elected mayor for two terms. He was instrumental in fund-raising for both the Hubbard Care Center and the new Hubbard grocery store. Wayne served three terms on the Mid-Iowa Mental Health Board of Directors and was a 34-year member of the Hubbard Lions Club. Wayne planted many of the trees that grace the entrance to an arboretum in Hubbard, and in 1996, donated a tract of land west of Hubbard to the Hardin County Conservation Board which became the Meier Wildlife Refuge. Over the years, the couple spent much time traveling, making friends worldwide.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta; one daughter, Judith of Ames; one son, Dr. Leslie Meier and wife Diane of Iowa Falls; three grandsons, Nathan Meier of Bettendorf, Matthew Meier of Downer's Grove, Ill., and Jordan Meier of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Gladys Winter of Iowa Falls and Lois Kulow and husband Lowell of Hubbard; one brother-in-law, Bob Elder and wife Marti of West Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Meier, in infancy, and Verna Brunemeier.
