DAVENPORT - Jerry L. Sunken, 65, of Davenport, formerly of Iowa Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Genesis West Hospital in Davenport. Funeral services were held Tuesday evening at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Davenport. Funeral services will also be held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Iowa Falls on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 10:30 a.m. with burial in the Friends Cemetery in Iowa Falls. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 2-8 p.m. at the church in Iowa Falls where the family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Flowers may be delivered to the respective churches.
Jerry was born July 8, 1938, in Ledyard to William and Pearl (Kliendal) Sunken. He was employed by the city of Iowa Falls, starting in the sanitation department and working his way up to police officer. Jerry served in the capacity of sergeant, captain and chief of police. He was appointed as the Hardin County Sheriff, serving for seven years. Jerry worked as a police detective on the LeClaire Police Department and was a security supervisor for the Diamond Lady Casino River Boat in Davenport. He retired in October of 2003 as maintenance supervisor for the Good Samaritan Care Center in Davenport.
Jerry enjoyed raising dogs, tropical fish, working outdoors in his yard and landscaping. Playing cards and table games with friends, and being with family, especially his grandchildren, were among his favorites. Jerry was the official Santa Claus during Christmas in Iowa Falls. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Davenport, and was involved in community service and volunteer work.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly; three sons, Kevin Sunken and wife Kris of Crete, Neb., David Sunken and wife Melody of Indianola and Daniel Sunken of Tyler, Texas; one daughter, Diane Kulow and husband Stan of Hubbard; and two brothers, Roy Sunken and wife Elaine and Ronald Sunken and wife Lucy all of Iowa Falls; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, Albert Sunken, Rosemary Sunken, Ben Sunken, Phillip Sunken, Leo Sunken and Daisy Wilkenson.
