PARKERSBURG - Carl Alter, 86, of Parkersburg died Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at the Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington. Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg with Rev. Paul Scheadig officiating. Burial was in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
Carl was born Feb. 21, 1917, on the family farm in Grundy County near Parkersburg. He received his education at Beaver No. 4 country school in Grundy County. Carl was a WW II veteran, serving from 1942-1945 in the U.S. Army as a bugler. He spent two years in the Aleutian Islands, returning to his family farm following his discharge. Carl assisted in the care of his mother in later years. He retired from farming in 1980 and moved to Parkersburg in 1984.
Carl was a life long member of Salem Lutheran Church, serving as sexton, and later a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He was an avid chess player and enjoyed reading, bowling, music and playing his trumpet.
Survivors include one brother, Bernard Alter, and wife Hazel of Cedar Falls; three sisters, Marie L. Madlom of Parkersburg, Margaret Aalfs and husband Lawrence of Parkersburg, and Dorothy Foster and husband Paul of Indianola; two nieces; and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Reinhard Alter.
Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home of Parkersburg was in charge of arrangements.
