MARSHALLTOWN - Leona D. Hertema, 91, of Marshalltown died Friday, Aug. 8, at Southridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Marshalltown. Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 11, at Pursel Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Marshalltown. Rev. Barry Holmes of First Congregational Church officiated. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. A memorial fund has been established.
Leona was born April 8, 1912, in Buckeye to Jay and Blanche (Stringer) Dougan. She was raised and educated in the Whitten area, graduating from the Whitten High School in 1930. On June 1, 1931, she married G.W. Hertema. They made their home in Hubbard, later moving to Green Mountain. Leona was employed by the Niederhauser Airport for many years and during this time she attained her pilot's license. She became a member of the Ninety-Niners, a women's pilots organization and a member of the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association. Leona was active with the Marshalltown Art Association, Marshalltown Toastmasters, Central Iowa Parlimentarians, and Iowa Horticultural Society. She was a member of the First Congregation Church.
Survivors include her brother, James Dougan and wife Gertrude of Hubbard; many nieces and nephews, including Renae Bohling and husband Eric of Radcliffe; two sisters-in-law; 31 great-nieces and nephews; and 31 great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, G.W.; her parents; a sister, Agnes Vaughn; and brother Marion "Bud" Dougan.
