ELDORA-Mary L. State, 68, of Eldora died Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Grundy Center Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Services were held Friday, July 25, at Dows Community Funeral Home in Dows with burial in Galt Cemetery. Pastor Stan Watne officiated.

Mary was born March 21, 1935, in Eldora to Jay and Bernice (Hanson) Brown. She was raised the the Eldora area and graduated from Eldora High School in 1954. Mary was employed as a waitress in various locations and returned to Eldora during the 1970s where she held a position in the housekeeping department at the Eldora hospital for 19 years. Mary loved animals, both stuffed and live, and responded generously to the needs of others.

Survivors include her husband, Darlyle; her mother-in-law, Estella State, of Belmond; two sisters-in-law, Arlyce Rout and her husband, Bill Jr., of Kanawha and Avonne Johnson and her husband, Robert, of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Vernon State and his wife, LaVonne of Dows; one niece Margo Carter and her husband, Craig; two great-nieces, Leah Winchester and Elizabeth Carter; one great-great-niece, Bailey Winchester; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marjorie; her father-in law, Don; and a brother-in-law, Merle.
