GARDEN CITY: Arlene Clarice Nelson, 84, of Garden City died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Memorial services were held Monday, Dec. 9, at Stavenger Lutheran Church in Garden City with burial of the cremated remains in the church cemetery.
Arlene was born Jan. 27, 1918, in Garden City to Anton and Christina Sampson Berven. She graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1936. On Oct. 11, 1941, she married Willard "Red" Nelson in Bethany, Mo. They lived in Louisiana and Texas while he was in the service and, after his discharge, moved to Garden City where he ran a garage. They moved to Minnesota for four years before returning to Garden City. He operated a trucking and shelling business and Arlene was bookkeeper. They retired in 1978 and lived in McCallsburg for 10 years. She moved into Bethany Manor in 2001. She was a member of Stavenger Lutheran Church in Garden City.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith Ackerman and husband Anthony of Iowa Falls and Janet Alvestad and husband Gene of Williams; two sons, Gerald Nelson and wife Patty and David Nelson and wife Peggy all of Garden City; seven grandchildren; one step granddaughter; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Willard Berven, of Benton City, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1991; two sons, Ronald and Larry; her twin brother Arnold; a brother, Jay, and a sister, Lois.
Boeke Funeral Home of Radcliffe was in charge of arrangements.
