MARSHALLTOWN-Russell M. "Sonny" Sharpshair, 83, of Marshalltown, formerly of Steamboat Rock, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. Services were held Thursday, Dec. 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock with burial in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Russell Sharpshair Memorial Fund.
Russell was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Steamboat Rock to William and Mattie Becke Sharpshair. He was graduated from Steamboat Rock High School and on July 11, 1942, he married Marjorie Douglas in Mountain Grove, Mo. He had a varied employment history including farming and laying tile. He also ran Sonny's Cafe and was school custodian. Russell was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; two daughters, Betty Kunc and husband Michael and Phyllis Eygabroad, all of Marshallown; a son, Kenneth, and wife Rebecca of Marshalltown; three sisters, Dorothy Kuhlman of Hubbard; May Penelerick and husband Elwin of Everett, Wash., and Kathleen Hartman of Hayward, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gareld; seven brothers and two sisters.
Biersborn Funeral Home in Union was in charge of arrangements.
