NEW PROVIDENCE-Mary Anna Spurgin, 84, of New Providence, formerly of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at her daughter's home in New Providence after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's disease. Services were held Monday, Aug. 6, at the Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church with burial in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Rev. Lloyd McDonald officiated. Memorials may be directed to Homeward Hospice, 400 South Dakota Street, Ames, IA 50014 or the Greenbelt Home Care, 1310 -24th St., Eldora, IA 50627.

Mary was born July 9, 1917, in Iron River, Mich., to Harry and Jessie Ritchie Sopher. The family moved to Des Moines and she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1935. She was attending Drake University when W. W. II began and she moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked at the Pentagon as a secretary. In 1947, she moved back to Iowa and married John Spurgin on Jan. 22, 1948. They lived in Oskaloosa where they ran the family business, "Kemble's Flowers." Mary moved to New Providence in 1990. Her hobbies were reading and needlework.

She is survived by her son, Robert Spurgin and his wife, Norma, of Atkins; a daughter, Ann Rains and husband, John, of New Providence; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, William Sopher, of Grinnell, and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lederer of Perry. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1988.
