MARSHALLTOWN-Madalene Ellen Speas, 83, of Marshalltown, died Friday, July 9, 2001, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. Memorial services will be held Friday, Aug. 10. The Rev. Jeffrey Frese will officiate at the 11 a.m. service at Grace United Methodist Church, 9 N. 5th Ave., Marshalltown, and there will be a luncheon following in the church basement. Family interment ceremonies will be held afterwards at Timber Creek Cemetery, rural Marshalltown.

Madalene was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Laurel, to James and Dora West Howard. She was married to Cordis Speas for 49 years and he preceded her in death in 1988. She worked at Stone's Restaurant in Marshalltown, for nearly 20 years and at the Iowa Veterans Home for 10 years, retiring in 1985. She most recently had lived at Prairie Village in Marshalltown and was a longtime volunteer at the Senior Citizens Center.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis Speas of Atlanta, Ga., and James Speas of Prescott, Ariz.; a son-in-law, Dale Aukes of Bangor, Maine; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren,; two sisters; and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, David in 1970; a daughter, Mary Ellen Speas in June 2000; a brother; and two sisters.
